I’m sure for most of us, this pandemic/quarantine situation has made us appreciate the smaller things. Well, at least early on before lockdown fatigue set in. Remember when we were ready to tackle projects and learn to bake bread? I was going to learn how to crochet. It’s on my summer list now.
With this new appreciation lens in place I thought I’d share some of the game changers I’ve come to rely on around the house.
Game Changer #1: The Cereal Canister
I currently own three of these little wonders and I keep asking myself why I didn’t have them before. In my pre-pandemic mind I thought these were total time wasters. Pouring them out of a perfectly good box into another container? Nonsense. But now that we are all wiping down groceries and eschewing packaging these are definitely game changers. It’s also strangely satisfying to hear the sound of the cereal cascading out of it’s plastic bag and into the canister. Makes for cute boomerangs too.
Benefits:
- Easy to pour for my kids
- Stays fresh longer
- No surprises when it’s empty because it’s see through
Game Changer #2: The Cactus Hamper
When we renovated a major sticking point for me was the family closet. You can read all about it here. Even though I liked the idea of a central place for clothes, I still had hampers in the bedrooms. Turns out that those were being used less and I was starting to pile clothes up in the hallway by the washing machine.
The hampers just became places where I kept out of season clothes I didn’t feel like washing. I was reluctant to get baskets because I wasn’t ready to give up the idea of having a clear hallway. Every now and then I would get super motivated, finish all the laundry and revel in the uncluttered space for a couple of the days. Then we’d be right back to the cluter.
I finally gave in and got three laundry baskets that I thought were super cute and could function as decor.
I adore them!
Benefits:
- Easy to sort
- Accessible to the washing machine so I don’t have to go around to all the hampers
- Right by the bathroom so it’s easier for the kids to drop their clothes in
Game Changer #3 – Cabinet Shelf
This one was a bit of an accident. I’m the worst when it comes to dimensions. Even when I measure it never seems to work out. Case in point- these shelf things. Originally I envisioned them for my wardrobe. I pretty much turned that into a linen closet when I moved my clothes to the family closet. The side for hanging clothes was being used for towels and I needed a solution that would create a shelf. I came up with this.
Way too small for the intended purpose so I found a new space. The bathroom had no place to store things but I did get a radiator cover that added a shelf space. This little darling gave me a way to organize the towels and add extra space.
I wish it looked like this most days but c’est la vie.
Benefits
- Creates two spaces for storage
- Functional and attractive
- Very cost effective solution ( cabinet shelf)
These are three of my favorite small things from around the house that have a big impact. What are some game changers in your house?
