Make it pop
So the stairs were mostly done and now I had an idea. Yay!
I was inspired by these:
Ombré spindles! How cool would that be!
The front area is a bluish gray and yellow. My idea of neutrals. After living with it for a bit it was just boring. Previously, my hallway was a burnt orange and red color. Like a very dramatic sunset.
Finally, the perfect way to add a little happy to the mix.
The Deets
For the top railing I thought I’d do a peach to pink.
I looked at a lot of colors.
Initially I thought I’d go blue to purple for the downstairs but it wasn’t bright enough.
A few quick tips
- Color swatches are your friend.
I like Behr paint so off we went to Home Depot to snatch up a bunch. The trick with them is to pay attention to the numbers on the cards. Putting the numbers in order is the good way to get a solid ombré if you want a lot of different colors.
Using this method you would look at the colors horizontally.
If you wanted to do a simple light to dark or vice versa use the card vertically. They’ve already done the work for you.
2. Sample sizes rock!
This tip I found on Pinterest. I was able to paint 6 spindles and give them a double coat with one little sample size. I even have paint left over.

Top railing I used 3 colors and the result is subtle. It pops nicely and works with the hallway colors.
For the stairs I used 4 colors. It’s less obvi ombré. but I like these colors together. I have varying shades of these colors throughout the house.
I really like the way it came out.
As a bonus I plan to put a little peel and stick wallpaper on the bottom front facing riser.
Would you do something like this in your house?
